The Renewable Energy Development Center participates in the national workshop on targets and indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Renewable Energy Development Center participated in the national workshop on targets and indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organized on December 16 and 17, 2018 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in consultation with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and with the support of the United Nations System (UNS).
This first workshop is part of the activities of the joint project to support the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs developed by the Algerian Government in collaboration with the United Nations System in Algeria and which emanates from the adoption of the Global Program of the United Nations for Sustainable Development by 2030.
It should be recalled that this program includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets and that Algeria’s commitment to the implementation of these SDGs has resulted in the establishment of an interministerial coordination committee and monitoring of the SDGs, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The National Statistical Office, in its capacity as representative of the countries of North Africa, and member of the Inter-agency Group of Experts on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDG’s), also played an important role in the formulation of SDGs and monitoring indicators.
The main objective of this workshop is summarized in the examination of the needs expressed by the stakeholders concerned by the production and collection of data in order to define the technical support to be provided by the United Nations System to better inform the indicators. SDGs, by strengthening national statistical capacities, promoting exchanges with experts, contributing to the improvement of intersectoral coordination around these indicators and / or through actions other than the sectors participating in these workshops identify.
This first workshop, focused on:
The state of play of intersectoral coordination around the data informing the SDG indicators, with particular attention to the following SDGs:
• SDG 4 linked to quality education,
• SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth,
• SDG 10 linked to reduced inequalities,
• SDG 13 on measures relating to the fight against climate change,
• SDG 16 on peace, justice and effective institutions,
• SDG 17 on partnerships for the achievement of the objectives.
These SDGs will be addressed as part of the Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the SDGs which will be presented to the High-Level Political Forum of the United Nations Economic and Social Council scheduled for the session to be held in July 2019;
The identification of immediate priority support that the United Nations System could provide in terms of strengthening national capacities for the production of data;
The presentation of the country’s achievements in the implementation of the SDGs and the evaluation of the related indicators, starting with those of SDGs 2: “Zero” hunger, 3: Good health and well-being and 5: Equality between the sexes, in a first step.
The event was inaugurated by the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. MAHI Boumédienne as well as the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, Mr. Eric Overvest and knew the participation of the focal points of the various sectors mainly the Ministry of ’Interior, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy, The Ministry of Agriculture, The Ministry of Water Resources, The Ministry of Health and The Ministry of Finance.
Presentations were made by several speakers, namely: Mr. Zoubir BENHAMOUCHE, Economist of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Office for North Africa, Mr. Yasser NADJEM, UNDP statistician, The representative of the National Statistical Office, Mr. BOUKLIA, national consultant, Mr. Adel ZEDDAM of UNAIDS, Dr. Lylia Oubraham of WHO, Mr. Nabil Assaf of FAO, Ms. Ouahiba SAKANI of UNFPA and Ms. Farah Outeldait de UN WOMEN.
Several recommendations were selected during this workshop, the most important of which are listed below:
1) Define the criteria for the development of the SDG indicators and the need to establish a national list of indicators, aligning with international methodologies and standards;
2) Disaggregate indicators and ensure ownership of the SDGs at all levels;
3) Promote the Algerian experience in implementing the SDGs, in particular through sharing at the international level;
4) Set up a platform for exchanging information, experience and best practices and centralize data;
5) Evaluate capacity building needs and identify the UN expertise capable of providing this support;
6) Capitalize on the actions already carried out at sector level in the implementation of the SDGs and continue to work at the national level for the collection of the necessary data in order to inform the SDGs, their implementation and their monitoring;
7) Strengthen the capacities of stakeholders in intersectorial data collection including civil society and the private sector;
8) Encourage the incorporation of technological supports for the collection of information and data
