CDER-IANOR: First workshop on certification of solar water heater products in Algeria

As part of the project "Strengthening Quality Infrastructure for Solar Energy in the Maghreb", the Renewable Energy Development Center (CDER) co-organized with the National Institute for Standardization (IANOR), a workshop on certification of solar water heater products in Algeria, on November 21st, 2017 in Algiers with the support of the German Metrology Institute (PTB).

The main objective of this workshop is first to share information about the certification of solar water heater products and the existing certification systems, to discuss the relevance of a system of certification of CES products in Algeria and to essentially identify the expectations of the various stakeholders with regard to such a system as well as the conditions to be taken into account for its development in the Algerian context.

The official opening of the workshop was given by Mr. Djamel HALES, General Director of IANOR, followed by Pr. Noureddine YASSAA, Director of the CDER and Mrs. Laura BLOMENKEMPER, Coordinator of the project "Strengthening Quality Infrastructure" for solar energy in the Maghreb "of the Physikalish-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).

The workshop was facilitated by national and international experts mainly Dr. Andreas BOHREN, head of the testing laboratory (SPF testing) and was attended by key actors, among others, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Agency for Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use (APRUE), the Algerian Accreditation Organization ALGERAC, the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) as well as manufacturers and installers of equipment such as Thermokad, MEK Energie and the company BABOUAIR.

At the end of this meeting, several debates took place and dealt with the following topics: the ALSOL program, the usefulness of product certification as well as the operating mode of certification, the Solar Keymark and SHAMCI certification systems, the different options of the certification systems (quality, costs, administrative requirements ...) and the recommended system for Algeria.

Following this workshop, a visit of the solar test laboratories and calibration of pyranometers of the Renewable Energy Development Center (CDER) was programmed the next day at its headquarters by experts from the Institute of German Metrology PTB.

During this guided tour by the project manager and the managers of the CDER laboratories, detailed explanations were given on the setting up of the technical facilities of the calibration laboratory and the reliability and durability test benches and performance test benches for solar water heater sensors and systems.
