Project 1: Test Bench of photovoltaic pumping systems

Algeria presents many remote areas characterized by a scattered and low population density, which suffer from serious problems of water supply for drinking and irrigation. Photovoltaic pumping system gives an ideal solution for these problems. The main problem is to know the functioning of the pump when it is powered by a photovoltaic generator, this will allow us to :

  • Test and evaluate photovoltaic pumping systems.
  • Perform a database of the engine-pump system.
  • Perform mathematical models that describe the behavior of the motor-pump assembly from its characteristic parameters, current, voltage, flow and height; these parameters are used in simulation and optimization programs. The bench is constructed of stainless steel and is easily removable. We distinguish the following parts:
  • a well
  • A water-air tank

  • A discharge branch between the well and the tank.
  • A discharge branch which includes the return of the tank to the wells.
  • An air compressor
  • Sensors and transducers of flow, level and pressure.
  • Control and visualization cabinet.
  • Connection cabinet for measures with external additional instrumentation.
  • A 2.2 kW photovoltaic generator
  • A wattmeter for AC power measures.
  • A programmable DC power source of 3kW.
  • A datalogger for data acquisition and control.
  • A personal computer with GPIB card for measurement and control

The measurement intervals are respectively from 0 to 2.2 kW for the PV generator power, from 0 to 120 m for the pumping height and from 0 to 30 m3 / h for the water pumped flow.
